COMFORT IN CRISIS EVENT FOR WHITE RIBBON

An appreciative crowd attended the Rotary Club of Erina “Comfort in Crisis” event in conjunction with White Ribbon on Tuesday 17 November, at the Erina Leagues Club.
The event was a panel-style forum where experts working in the area of domestic violence gave their perspective on the issues facing the Central Coast community.  Representatives were from the Salvation Army, Coast Shelter, Staying Home Leaving Violence and Brisbane Water Area Command. The panel was moderated by Scott Levi from ABC Local Radio.
Questions to the panel ranged from how victims of domestic violence can access a refuge; how the police are trained to respond to domestic violence; the need to educate men in the community that violence against women is not acceptable, and the desperate shortage of affordable accommodation, both short and longer term.
Many who attended brought along gifts of personal items such as toothbrushes, deodorants, soaps and moisturisers for women who find themselves in a refuge with nothing of their own.  Personal goods and raffle prizes were donated by East Gosford Pharmacy, Blooms Erina Fair and Priceline Woy Woy.

NORTHBRIDGE ROTARY SENDS EMERGENCY SHELTERS TO NEPAL

Northbridge has donated around 100 corrugated iron permanent shelters to victims of the Nepal earthquake.  The club’s donation was made possible mainly through a “bucket appeal” to Northbridge residents in May and subsequent donations which together raised more than $18,000.
The houses each hold from six to eight people, and in total will provide shelter for up to 800 people.  Most of these houses will be overseen and organised through the Rotary Club of Banepa, Nepal.
